How to Create a Gender-Neutral Wedding Party

How to Create a Gender-Neutral Wedding Party

Same-Sex Marriage with Champagne FlutesYour wedding day is intended to celebrate you and your spouse in any manner that you desire. If a conventional wedding party isn’t for you, Handfastings and Weddings encourages you to defy gender roles within your wedding.

The age-old tradition of a standard wedding party is not practical for many couples and it is important to explore what your options are outside of that.

Ways to Switch Up Your Wardrobes

Coordinating a gender-neutral wardrobe for a wedding is easier than you may think; don’t overthink it. If your wedding consists of a specific color theme, which most do, have both men and women wear similar color which will help everyone to blend together when standing side by side. Don’t require the men to wear suits and don’t require the women to wear dresses. Instead, let everyone wear what they feel most comfortable in. Don’t be afraid to get creative and have fun. Seek the opinions of those in your party and see what they’re thinking!

Give Gender Neutral Gifts

Once again, tradition states that couples should gift their bridesmaids and groomsmen a “special something” for playing a special role in the wedding. However, don’t feel like you need to choose gifts based on gender. It is simpler to gift all those involved a nice bottle of champagne or liquor, depending on that person’s taste, and a personalized glass. There is also no reason to feel obligated to give everyone the same gift. We are all individuals after all. Consider choosing small gifts that accurately represent your relationship with that individual, it will absolutely mean more to them.

Combine the Beforehand Celebrations

Finding activities that both men and women enjoy doing together can be surprisingly difficult. While generally the maid of honor and the best man plan the events leading up to the wedding, such as the bachelor/bachelorette party, you might want to chime in on your preferences to ensure all parties are happy. Consider having a co-ed party and plan a night out on the town for the entire wedding party to enjoy together. You’ll have a blast because you’ll have the people you care most about by your side and it will help everyone to get to know one another before the big day.

Regardless of what decisions you make leading up to your wedding, be sure to follow your own vision as a couple. At Handfastings and Weddings, Rev. Debra S. Lippitt can help you design a ceremony just for you. To start planning your general-neutral wedding, get in touch with us today!
